Site Table of Contents

As a creative real estate investing guide that hopes to share as much information about real estate investing as possible, I found that the best way to keep all content easily accessible to my readers was to create a table of contents. It worked very good, but I thought that it would be nice to share the code with others in an easy to use plugin.

Although we are a Guide for Creative Real Estate Investing, we still know our way around a computer and would like to share our plugin with both real estate investors and the like. It’s call Site Table of Contents.

The Site Table of Contents plugin allows a users to easily create a page that lists all posts and their respective categories in an easy to use and dynamic way. Place <!--site_toc--> where you would like the table of contents to appear. Use the HTML editor window when editing the form.

Give it a try and please let me know what you think.

There is currently 1 known bug. The page that uses the TOC plugin will not display comments. People can still comment and you can still respond, but they do not display. We’re currently working on a fix for this.

Nice plugin, but does it allow paging of the TOC. I mean a site with 4000 posts in a TOC needs to be paged.

  2. Alex Forbes says:

STOC is intended to list all posts and their respective categories. It seems to stop listing at 5 entries per category. Even your own indexes for categories ‘Thoughts’ and ‘Investing Team’ report (6) posts but only list 5 of them. I could not find Options to set or reset a default.

  3. Augie says:

    Alex-

Good find! I totally missed that. I just fixed it and you should now see all posts under each category.

  4. Augie says:

    Richard-

That would be a great feature. My thought here was to allow a single page that would get someone to every other page. You make a good point though. If you have 50 or so pages, it makes sense to load them up onto one page, but 4000 would be a bit much. I’m going to look into that.

  5. Alex Forbes says:

Augie, much better, and thanks. I have 11 WP installations/departments at http://www.summitlake.com, and ver 0.2 seems perfect on 9 of them. (1) WRITING [http://www.summitlake.com/WRITING/WP/?page_id=374] suggests a problem with posts with multiple categories. CAT Fred Leeds shows 6 entries correctly but lists none. GUEST shows 1 listing correctly but lists 7. (the other 6 should be under Leeds).

    (2) HOME [http://www.summitlake.com/HOME/WP/?page_id=483] has the largest number of posts, displays correct qualtities for att cats, but lists none of them. I tried deleting cache, deactivating and reactivating ver 0.2, and can’t figure out the pattern.

I also have Articles 1.3 by Alex King to compare to, and it lists OK. I am running WP version 2.8 on all installations.

    Thanks

    Alex

  6. Andrew says:

EXCELLENT plugin! I was looking for something like this for a long time. It works very well so far, but there are a couple glitches, one of which is that when I select the category for it to show it won’t save the setting. Thank you!

  7. Augie says:

    Hmmmm…

I’ll take a look. Thanks for the feedback.

  8. Augie says:

Do you mean in the options you can’t save which options to exclude?

  9. Alex Forbes says:

I found the Options page and tested several exclusion checkbox combinations. They work perfectly. Since STOC 0.2 works perfectly on most of my WP installations, I’m going to assume there’s something wrong with my HOME installation, I will probably try rebuilding with a clean 2.8 install. Thanks for having taken your time on this!

  10. Alex Forbes says:

Augie, I found the problem on my ‘HOME’ installation. For some reason I had prefixed all the cat slugs with ‘cat-’, for example category Writing had a slug of cat-writing. Removing all these made the slugs seen as unique, I guess. STOC indexes all the categories now. Thanx for your patience.

  11. Augie says:

Nice! That’s kind of weird. You’d think that if there was any unique part of the name that it would treat it as unique. Good find.

  12. Alex Forbes says:

The Pst Cats page says hyphens are allowed, but that doesn;t seem to be the case! I assume you (or they) have fallthrough logic for dupes in the loop and I fell thru on ‘cat-’ perhaps?

BTW as unregistered Creative RealEstate user I can only see Comment replies in my email notifies – that’s expected, or I’m missing something?

  13. Augie says:

Yeah, I just noticed that. For some reason, the pages that have the TOC don’t show comments… although people can still comment. It’s a display issue. And I’m pulling out my hair because none of the variables I used in the plugin should be causing that. Are you able to see comments on pages where you display the TOC?

Gotta love betas. I really appreciate your feedback.

  14. Angela says:

This plugin is a MUST for blogs! Thanks bunches! Is there any way to modify the plugin so it keeps sub-categories with their parent categories. That would put the plugin over the top!

  15. Richard says:

Please note: I can’t see any comments on this site! Getting lots of notifications leading to this page, but NO comments are showing. Firefox 3.1

  16. Augie says:

    Thank you very much, Angela-

Thanks for the input. I’m going to look into subcategories.

  17. Augie says:

    Richard-

I’m working on that bug right now. The page that shows this TOC does not show comments, but can receive them. It does not affect any other page. I’m on it, thought.

  18. Alex Forbes says:

Hi Augie, removing the hyphen did help a LOT, but some cats still don’t list right, e.g. My Notes (22) has no bullet list and its unique post cat slug is ‘mynotes’. [http://www.summitlake.com/HOME/WP/?page_id=483]. I tried your rel 0.3 link but it leads to WP rel 2.0 and installs with the same result.

OK, I see the issue: the cats with the issue have TWO words in their post cat name (not the slug name), such as My Notes, La Parola and Site News. Changing ‘Site News’ to ‘SiteNews’ results in the proper listing of 40 entries for the cat. Odd … is this a WP thing?

    Thanks — Alex

  19. Augie says:

That’s strange because most of my categories have more than one word as the name… my slugs are in the format this-is-the-category.

  20. Alex Forbes says:

Yes, it’s strange. In WRITING I had 5 problem cats, ‘Dave Norton’, ‘Fred Leeds’, ‘Mini-Bio’, ‘Short Stories’ (fixed)and ‘Writing Notes’ (fixed). The “Fix” consisted in experimentally adding the hyphen back INTO the slug name. It’s so inconsistent, do you think it could be a WP update failure or a database issue?

  21. Nice set of info about real estate and mortgage investing shared here. I couldn’t find all these info from one place. Excellent idea of compiling all related contents in one page.

  22. 180News.com says:

CONGRATS!! I was looking for a plugin like this for a long time. I did find a couple earlier, but they just did not do the job right. This Table of Contents plugin will save me hours…correction….days and days of writing and updating each post I publish on about 10 different blogs.

I do have one question (concern). If you go to my site at http://www.180News.com and click on the “News Article Posts” link on the main menu, one article in the “Headlines” category called “Will The U.S. Postal Service Close Post Offices?” displays a wrong link – http://www.180news.com/headlines/759.htm. That page should not display as 759.htm.

    It should show …180news.com/headlines/will-the-US-postal……

ALSO, will you be upgrading the admin panel to enable opening the post either on the same page or in a new page (target=”_blank”)?

All in all, no complaints. Great job with this plugin.

    Thanks,
    Joe

  23. Augie says:

Hi, I just checked your site and don’t see the problem. Are you still having it? When I hover over the link and also when I click it, it uses the rewrite links.

  24. Rhys says:

    Hi Augie -

I just installed 0.3 and I have to tell you it was the easiest and fastest plugin install for many a long timne.

It looks real good to me too.

BTW. What will happen when the number of posts gets higher – like 100+ ??

  25. Augie says:

Thank you and I’m glad you enjoy it.

Yes, there is a bug right now that I’ve recently discovered and am investigating. The page that displays the TOC plugin for some reason does not show the comments, although they’re there. People can comment and I can respond, but they don’t display on the page. I’m currently looking for a fix. This only happens on pages that use the TOC and no other pages.

  26. I think the “Get Involved” part is the most crucial to acheive our goals …

  27. I appreciate the creative approaches to real estate investing you cover here. In particular, I think exit strategies are overlooked in most other real estate sites. Keep up the great articles and videos!
